Catholic Teaching on Reconciliation
Reconciliation, also commonly known as Confession or Penance, is the sacrament in which those who are sorry for their sins come to God to be reconciled to their Heavenly Father. Just as the father in the story of the prodigal son waited every day for his son to return to him and then ran out to meet him halfway, so our Heavenly Father does with His people. Though we stumble and fall, often on a daily basis, He awaits us in Confession. Reconciliation is administered by priests, who are able to hear our sins on God's behalf and offer absolution, forgiving our sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
