Strong Adult Faith Formation attends to our heart, our mind, our soul, and our body. It is an integrated understanding of who we are as beloved children of God, who are continually urged to know, love, and serve God more fully. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops describes adult faith formation as an essential process inviting Catholic Christians to integrate their own life experiences with knowledge of the faith, love of God, and love of neighbor.
The USCCB affirmed their commitment to Adult Faith Formation with Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States. The main goal the bishops point out is that parishes should offer ways for enabling an ongoing relationship with Jesus. After all, what is at the center of our faith isn’t a what at all—it’s a who. Christian faith is centered on a person, not dogma or doctrine.
The USCCB’s second goal for effective adult faith formation is to promote and support active membership in the Christian community. This we do very well here at St. Jude: active stewardship. We are all called to read scripture and attempt to apply it to our lives. With this goal in mind, adult faith formation is very relevant as we each become disciples by learning how to live out our faith in our everyday life.
We want to encourage you as an adult to claim authority for your faith. To do that, we want to empower you to build on the confidence of your formation, so you can speak more easily and more frequently about your faith.
Adult Faith Formation is a process not a program so we follow the example of Ezra as we Study, Practice and Teach the word of God.
This formation happens through Scripture Studies, Prayer Series, and Small Groups.
