- First Holy Communion is when a person receives the eucharist for the first time. As Catholics, we believe that the Eucharist is the true presence of Jesus Christ and the source and summit of our Christian faith. This encounter with Jesus’ true presence - body, blood, soul, and divinity - is a very special event. First Communion is preceded by the Sacrament of Penance, also known as confession or reconciliation.
