Teaching on the Sacrament of Marriage
Marriage is a covenant established by God and further blessed by Jesus Christ in which a man and a woman join in a free, total, faithful, and fruitful union for the sake of one another. It is free because love can only be given freely; it is total because love demands that husband and wife give themselves to one another totally; it is faithful because spouses must be true to one another; it is fruitful because it is designed to produce children, the “supreme gift of marriage” CCC 1652.

“For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church. In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband.”
